Istanbul Disaster Prevention Centre

Utilizing the principle of natural equilibrium, the design for the Istanbul Disaster Prevention and Education Centre promotes consistency in the interior organization, while permitting an affinity for the site and surroundings. Formerly a parking zone and traffic bottleneck, this site has the potential to become a key attraction, providing new space for public activities. The Centre, as well as the park on its grounds, will support a large number of sporting, cultural, and entertainment activities.

The interior spaces in the building are arranged in simple boxes that extend the length of the plot, each covered with a mechanized system of movable louvers, creating shelter during a natural disaster. A flexible covering allows spaces to reach out towards the natural context, while remaining insulated from environmental effects. Larger public areas and higher-occupancy spaces are situated on the ground floor to allow for easy egress.
